Abstract

AbstractThree dimensional printing (3D printing) is a process to create threedimensional objects from electronic resources by increasing layers ofobject. This technology was applied in several fields including medical andpharmaceutical sciences. In medical sciences, 3D printing could make 3Dmodels of patients’ organ for surgical planning, patient-specific orthopedicimplants, 3D models of organs for medical study, dental implants anddenture print, medical equipment or splints in physical therapy, and patientspecificprostheses identical to real organs in plastic surgery. Inpharmaceutical sciences, 3D printing is currently in a research anddevelopment stage. The most outstanding drug property from 3D printing isindividualized drugs that could offer easier use, better drug release control, and less risk of adverse events, particularly for a narrow therapeutic indexdrug. Examples of 3D printing drug products are, patient-specificindividualized dose products, combined products, controlled releaseproducts. In addition, 3D printing was also used to create in-situ humantissues in earlier stage drug tests, or pre-clinical trials. A direct 3D printingof medications could be done in the near future. The production of medicalequipment and medications by 3D printing was approved by the US FDA.However, there remain various concerns including poor quality control, violations on intellectual property rights and drug patents, and abuse of 3Dprinting for crimes and narcotic production. Keywords: 3D printing, health, medicine, pharmacy, technology
