Abstract

Objective: In Tambon health promoting hospitals (THPHs), healthcareproviders on duty are probably responsible for advising the patient on theuse of asthma medication devices. A training program for promotingknowledge and skills on asthma medication devices for non-pharmacisthealthcare providers at the hospital was set. This research aimed to assessknowledge necessary for advising patients and skills in using asthmamedication devices before and after the training session. Methods: Studysubjects were healthcare providers in 14 THPHs, in a district of a provincein central region of Thailand. During Dec. 2013 to Mar. 2014, we providedon-site training at each of the hospitals using slides for oral presentation, demonstration and training with actual devices including aerosol inhalerswith and without spacer, and two dry power inhalers, Accuhaler® andTurbuhaler®. Knowledge for advising patients and skills in using each of thedevices were assessed before, right after and 1 month after the trainingsession, and statistically tested between each time-point. Results: Of 51providers, 38 enrolled in the study. Scores of knowledge and inhaler skillon each device at right after and 1 month after training session significantlyincreased from before the training. However, at 1 month after training, mean scores of all measures decreased with statistical significance, exceptthose of knowledge and Accuhaler® skill. Results regarding rates of thosewith perfect score of knowledge and skills on device use were similar to themean score measures. Conclusion: Training on asthma inhaler medicationdevices using oral presentation, demonstration and device training couldincrease knowledge and skills among healthcare providers at Tambonhealth promoting hospitals. Strategies to maintain knowledge and skillsshould be further tested. Keywords: metered dose inhaler, knowledge, skill, healthcare providers,Tambon health promoting hospitals
