Abstract

Nanotechology has been developed and applied in various productsworldwide. This article aimed to summarize all international provisions oncontrol, regulation and oversight on 5 groups of nanotechnology productsincluding drugs, medical devices, food, cosmetics and biocidal products.This information could be useful in developing the provisions on thesenanotechnology products in Thailand. Study countries included 1) the US,2) the European Union (EU) and Asian countries. The EU employs theexisting provision measures on control, regulation and oversight on drugsand medical devices, and uses the existing regulation measures on food,cosmetics and biocidal products. In the US, measures based on theexisting provisions are also used on drugs, medical devices, and biocidalproducts, while food and cosmetics are controlled by measures the existingregulations, some of which are measures specific to product safety issues.In Asian countries including China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, nospecific provisions on the 5 products have been developed. However, theneeds for the provisions on control, regulation and oversight onnanotechnology products have been addressed, and in some of thesecountries, tangible specific measures have been developed. For example,nanotechnology product trademark approval system called “Nanomark” hasbeen created in Taiwan.Keywords: nanotechnology, nanomaterial, regulation of nanotechnology,nanotechnology applications
