Abstract

AbstractObjective: To determine 1) prevalence of gingival enlargement in patientsusing amlodipine and 2) association between amlodipine use and gingivalenlargement. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried outin 169 hypertensive patients. Of these, 84 patients taking amlodipine (studygroup) and 85 patients taking others anti-hypertensive medications(comparison group) were included. There were three dentists examiningoral hygiene index, gingival index and gingival enlargement in both groups.The study was conducted at diabetes and hypertension clinic, NgaoHospital, Lampang, from May to July, 2013. Results: There was gingivalenlargement in nine patients (10.7%) in the study group. Of these, 8patients were considered having mild gingival enlargement (9.5%) and apatient had moderate gingival enlargement (1.2%), whereas no gingivalenlargement was found in comparison group. Rate of gingival enlargementin patients having amlodipine was significantly higher than those incomparison group (P < 0.05) Conclusion: The prevalence of gingivalenlargement in patients using amlodipine was 10.7% and use of amlodipinewas significantly associated with gingival enlargement.Keywords: gingival enlargement, amlodipine
