Abstract

AbstractObjective: This quasi-experimental study with one-group pre-post testdesign aimed to determine effects of health behavior modification programto prevent diabetes on health status, health belief and self-care practiceamong high-risk population in Chumphuang district, Nakhon Ratchasimaprovince. Methods: A total of 190 individuals participated the programbetween May 2012 and June 2013Seventeen. Collected data consisted of1) demographic information and health status (body mass index, waistcircumference, cholesterol, triglyceride and 8-hr fasting blood sugar), 2)health belief including perceived risk of diabetes (5 questions), perceivedseverity of diabetes (5 questions), and perceived benefit and obstacles indiabetes prevention, and 3) self-care practice to prevent diabetes includingdiet (15 questions), exercise (5 questions) and stress management (8questions). Participants were trained and followed for encouraging healthbehavior change at months1, 3 and 6. Data collections were done beforethe training program and 1 year thereafter. Each outcome was tested forstatistical significance using paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05.Results: At 1 year, cholesterol level deceased statistically significant frompre-training (P = 0.010), while other health status measures changedslightly with no statistical significance. All scores of health belief and selfcarepractice did not change, except exercise score of which a smalldecrease (i.e., being worse) with statistical significance was observed (P =0.028). Conclusion: Health behavior modification program to preventdiabetes among high-risk population in Chumphuang district, NakhonRatchasima province resulted in a significant decrease in cholesterol level,but not change in health belief or self-care practice.Keywords: health behavior modification program, high-risk population,diabetes, health belief, self-care practice
