Skin Hydrating and Anti-wrinkle Effects of Nile Tilapia Fish Skin Collagen Cream

Abstract

Objective: To determine skin moisturizing and anti-wrinkle effects ofcosmetic cream containing 1% collagen isolated from Nile tilapia fish skincompared with 1% calf collagen cream. Method: In our double blind,control study, 16 healthy volunteers were enrolled to apply the two types ofcollagen cream onto each forearm twice a day for 1 month. Evaluation ofefficacy (based on Corneometer or Visioscan), satisfaction and safety (byskin patch test) were carried out at baseline and every week until the endof the study. Results: At week 4, 1% fish collagen cream significantlyincreased skin hydration (137.50 ± 6.48% of baseline value, P < 0.05) buthad no effects on skin roughness, smoothness or wrinkles. Its effects werecomparable to those of 1% bovine collagen cream. Most volunteersreported the fish skin cream could moderately spread and absorb throughtheir skin. It had greasy texture and offered a slight improved skin softness.11.11% of volunteers experienced skin hypersensitivity. Conclusion: Wehereby established the effective moisturizing effect of this 1% Nile tilapiafish skin collagen cream. It has shown the great potential for furtherdevelopment of this cream as a cosmetic product to diminish skin drynessor wrinkles.Keywords: collagen cream, collagen, Nile
