Abstract

Objective: To identify the botanical origins of “Chan-Khao” and “Chan-Thana.” Methods: Twenty-eight samples of Chan-Khao and Chan-Thanawere randomly purchased from Thai traditional drugstores. Chemicalfingerprints of their methanolic extracts were developed using thin-layerchromatography compared with authentic samples. A main chemicalcomposition was also isolated, purified and identified by spectroscopictechniques. Results: Most of Chan-Khao and Chan-Thana samplesshowed identical TLC chromatograms to Tarenna hoaensis, and containedgeniposidic acid, one of the chemical constituents found in Tarenna spp.One sample of Chan-Khao revealed a TLC chromatogram similar to that ofSantalum spicatum. Eight samples of Chan-Khao and Chan-Thana, dividedinto 3 species based on their TLC chromatograms, could not be identified. Conclusion: Nowadays commercially available Chan-Khao and Chan-Thana were originated from 5 plant species. Most of them were heartwoodof T. hoaensis. Keywords: Chan-Khao, Chan-Thana, botanical identification, Thin-layerchromatography, Tarenna hoaensis
