Abstract

Objective: To study skills development process in health communication inthe dimension of using language, convey, and information technology, inHealth Promotion course for Nursing Students, Faculty of Nursing,Srinakarinwirot University. Method: In this qualitative research, 19 secondyearnursing students enrolling the Health Promotion course in the secondsemester, academic year 2013, were key informants. Data were collectedby means of in-depth interview, participatory and non-participatoryobservation, group discussion, and documentary review. Content analysiswas used to analyze the data. Results: Five major themes of the skillsdevelopment process in health communication for the nursing student wereemerged namely 1) Enhancing conception in general and details of learningprogram, 2) Promoting concepts and principles by understanding theoreticalconcept of health communication, 3) Building team-work for participatorylearning process, 4) Strengthening self-confidence by improving healthcommunication skills in using language, convey, and informationtechnology, and 5) Creating learning from real situation via the assignmentof health promotion activities based on target population or problems.Conclusion: Findings serve as a guide to arrange teaching and learning ofother nursing courses to enhance health communication skills for nursingstudents to provide health care to people effectively.Keywords: health communication, learning and teaching, nursing students,health promotion
