Abstract

Objective: To examine the effect of a health volunteer’s competencydevelopment program on knowledge about diabetes and satisfaction onservices among type 2 diabetes persons in a community of Bangkokmetropolis. Methods: This one group pretest-posttest design, quasiexperimentalresearch used the purposive sampling method for therecruitment of totaling 30 persons with diabetes type 2 from one communityin Bangkok. Starting from Jan. 2012 to Dec. 2012, all participants receivedusual nursing care along with services by health volunteers who got theircompetencies enhanced by health volunteer’s competency developmentprogram. The measurements of this study including 1) a health volunteer’scompetency development program, 2) the Demographic and Medical Form,3) the Knowledge about Diabetes Questionnaire, and 4) the Satisfactionson Services by Health Volunteers Questionnaire, were approved for contentvalidity by 3 experts. KR-20 and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the lasttwo questionnaires were 0.74 and 0.97, respectively. Descriptive statisticsand paired t-test were used to analyze the data. Results: After theprogram, mean score of knowledge about diabetes was significantly higherthan those before the program (P < 0.001). The mean score of satisfactionon services by health volunteers was in the highest level. Conclusion:Health volunteers undergoing the Health Volunteer’s CompetencyDevelopment Program was efficient in taking care of and teaching personswith diabetes type 2.Keywords: competency, health volunteer, knowledge about type 2diabetes, satisfactions
