Abstract

Objective: To determine suspect adulteration of steroids in various types ofdrug products including powders, pills, tablets, liquids and capsules, and todetermine amount, frequency and cause of use of these products.Methods: Descriptive survey study was conducted in thirteen communitiesin Bangkok. The study was performed in two parts including patientinterview questionnaire for determining frequency and cause of use ofthese products and qualitative measurement for suspect adulteration ofsteroids using test kits of the Department of Medical Sciences (DMSc),Ministry of Public Health. Results: Thirty-five participants were included inthis study and 100 drug product samples were collected. Twenty threesuspect adulterated samples (23% of total samples) were found in 6communities. Of 23 suspect adulterated samples, all were tablets (as41.07% of all 56 tablets samples). Most suspect adulterated tablets werebrown or red cylindrical in appearance. Frequency of using theseadulterated tablets was 1 -2 times per month for pain reliever. Conclusion:Suspect adulterated samples were found in 6 of 13 communities. All ofthem were tablets. However, this primary test should be reevaluated fromthe DMSc.Keywords: adulteration of steroids, powders, pills, tablets, liquids, capsules
