Abstract

Objective: The purposes of this descriptive correlation research aimed tostudy perceived stigma and its relationships with related factors includingsocial support, perceived self – efficacy, and hope among patients withSchizophrenia. Method: Eighty patients with Schizophrenia from OutPatient Psychiatric Department of government hospitals in Trat province.They were selected by using multi-stage sampling technique. Theinstruments included questionnaires to capture data regarding demographicdata, perceived stigma, social support, perceived self - efficacy and hope.Data was collected via interview and analyzed by using descriptivestatistics using percentage, means, standard deviation, and test therelationships by using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.Results: The mean score of the perceived stigma was at a low level ( x =31.11; SD = 9.67), the social support was at a high level ( x = 76.07; SD= 11.70), the general perceived self–efficacy ( x = 24.10; SD = 5.98) andhope ( x = 36.08; SD = 4.35) were at moderate levels. The perceivedstigma had significantly negative correlation with the social support (r = -0.37, P < 0.01) and hope (r = -0.27, P < 0.05). Conclusion: The findingsfrom this study suggest that nurses and related health care professionsshould promote social support and enhance hope among patients withSchizophrenia in order to reduce perceived stigma and enable them to livewell with their families and societies.Keywords: perceived stigma, schizophrenia, social support, perceivedself-efficacy, hope
