Abstract

Objective: To examine how the selected personnel factors and parentingstyles were related to emotional quotient among nursing students,Srinakharinwirot University. Methods: This descriptive correlational studyused multi-stage random sampling to recruit a sample of 215 participantswho had been full time students in the Faculty of Nursing. Threequestionnaires including 1) the Personnel Data Questionnaire, 2) theParenting Styles Questionnaire, and 3) the Emotional QuotientQuestionnaire were used for data collection. All questionnaires wereapproved by 3 experts and the last 2 questionnaires’ reliabilities were 0.85and 0.78, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,Pearson’ product moment correlation coefficient, and Eta coefficient.Results: Most participants were female and their latest cumulative gradeswere good. Most have been treated by authoritative parental pattern andtheir emotional quotient was normal. There was no significant differencebetween the selected personnel factors including gender, age, educationallevel, the latest cumulative grades, father and mother’s marital status,father’ career, mother’s career, the father’s highest educational level, andthe mother’s highest educational level and emotional quotient. Moreover,authoritative parental pattern were significant positive correlation withemotional quotient. Authoritarian parental pattern was significant negativeassociated with the emotional quotient. Conclusions: These results can beutilized as basic information for developing intervention for emotionalquotient of nursing students by promoting authoritative parental pattern.Keywords: selected personnel factors, parenting styles, emotional quotient,nursing students
