Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this article, we emphasize the importance of product differentiation usinga case study. At a community pharmacy, a client asked the pharmacist forCounterpain Cool®, an analgesic gel for his mother, a patient withosteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Even though Counterpain Plus® haspiroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which makesthe product indicative for her knee OA; it gave her an unpleasant burningsensation. From history taking, her knee OA was mild and the pain couldbe adequately alleviated by oral paracetamol most of the time. It wasrecommended that if the pain was not well controlled by oral paracetamol, the drug of choice for OA, she could use additional topical NSAID. If paincontrol was not satisfactory, oral NSAID with the lowest effective dosecould be added. The pharmacist recommended lifestyle changes specific tothis patient to reduce the use of the knee. This article also suggestsapplications in training for pharmacy students in all levels. Keywords: Counterpain®, osteoarthritis of the knee, burning sensation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
