Abstract

This article deals with poetry translation from French to Thai through the use of theTheory of Meaning. According to the theory, translation is possible in every language andevery kind of speech as long as translation process is done at the meaning level and notat the language level. The Theory of Meaning recommends three main processes oftranslation which are understanding, deverbalization and expression. The differencesbetween two main speeches, which are informative speech and aesthetic speech, aredetailed as well as those between the poetry itself and the other sub-type of esthetic speech.A translated version of French poem, Victor Hugoûs Demain, des lûaube..., has been selectedto demonstrate how this specific theory is applied in translating process step by step. Guidingcriteria on the choices of Thai versification and the conclusion are given at the ending partof this article.
