Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine problems related to injury in vocal organs of aerobic leaders.Methods: Participants were 35 aerobic leaders who volunteered and signed consent forms to participate in the study. These participants completed the critical incident forms. Then 16 out of 35 were selected based on three conditions, namely ageing between 26-36 years, having at least 1 year of experience in leading aerobic, and teaching aerobic at least 6 sessions per week. These 16 participants were observed and interviewed. Data from critical incidence, observation and interview were analyzed through a constant comparison and triangulated across methods.Results: Results indicated 4 themes. First, (1) reasons of injury in vocal organs were due to (1.1) ways of using voice while leading such as yelling, screaming, (1.2) leading a lot of class sessions (1.3) having many attendants, the more participants, the louder the voice required, (1.4) poor quality of voice maker equipment and (1.5) disturbance of noise around workplace. Theme two (2) was about symptom of injury related to vocal organs. Those were (2.1) coughing, itching, and sore throat, (2.2) losing of voice on and off, and (2.3) having some rash in the throat. Third theme, (3) the effect of vocal organs injury was found 3 categories namely, (3.1) missing the job and losing income, (3.2) problems in using voice during communication, and (3.3) other health related problems. Last theme (4) was ways to reduce problems related to injury in vocal organs. Those were (4.1) drinking more liquid, (4.2) having enough rest, (4.3) using proper voice maker equipments and (4.4) learning techniques of how to use voice properly.Conclusion: Aerobic leaders had high risk of injury related to vocal organs. Most of the problems caused from improper uses of voices while leading the activities resulting in health problems. There were a numbers of ways, however, that aerobic leaders could reduce problems related to injury in vocal organs, such as drinking more liquid, having enough rest, using proper voice maker equipments and learning techniques of how to use voice properly.
