Abstract

(Factors affecting Infection Prevention Behavior among Nurses Working at Emergency Rooms)Abstract Objectivesof this survey research were to study the factors affecting the behavior forinfection prevention among nurses in emergency rooms. The samples were 43nurses working at emergency rooms from 2 medical centers. Research instrumentsfor data gathering comprised 6 point rating scale questionnaires: 1)demographic data; 2) perceived severity of infection 3) perceivedsusceptibility of infection; 4) perceived self-efficacy of infectiousprevention; 5) perceived sufficiency of equipment for infectious prevention;and, 6) behavior for infection prevention. The collected data were analyzed bydescriptive statistics, one way analysis of variance, independent samplet-test, logistic regression, and Pearson correlation. The results revealedthat: 1) nurses had high level of their perceived severity and susceptibilityof infection, perceived self- efficacy and sufficiency of equipment forinfection prevention. They also had a good level of infection preventionbehavior; 2) differences of samples’ in terms of age and education level didnot affect their infection prevention behavior but work experience and previousexperience of infectious prevention training affected their infectionprevention behavior (p<.05); 3) the previous experience of infectionprevention training and work experience significantly predicted the behavior ofinfectious prevention among nurses in emergency rooms (p<.01). The previousexperience of infection prevention training and work experience were able topredict 3 and 2 times of the behavior of infection prevention among them, respectively. The perceived susceptibility of infection did not correlate withtheir infection prevention behavior; and 4) perceived severity of infection,self- efficacy and perceived sufficiency of equipment for infectious preventionhad significantly positive correlated with the samples’ infection preventionbehavior (p<.01). The recommendation is that administrators of emergencyrooms should act for the infection prevention training as an infectionprevention policy continuously and support sufficient  equipment for infection prevention.                         Keywords: Emergency room,Infectious prevention, Nurse
