The errors ranged from most to least were (1) seven aspects of grammar and structure including use of noun, use of tense, use of indirect object, word order, use of pronoun, use of passive voice and conditional form (2) word choice and (3) substantive adherence to the source language. The causes of the errors were from influence of the mother tongue, influence of the English language, which was the students’ first foreign language, and lack of understanding or ignorance of grammatical rules and sentence structure in German. The findings of this research may be used as a guide for the teaching and learning of a course in German translation in order to prevent and rectify problems related to translation on the part of the students.
