Abstract
This research aimed to study Srinakharinwirot University first-year students๛reading and writing skills of Thai language. Causes and problems found in theirThai reading and writing skills were analyzed, along with a comparative studyof such skills varying among students of different study majors.The subjects were 346 first-year students in Fundamental Thai Languagecourses in the first semester of 2006 academic year, selected from thirteen facultiesin three main schools of study, on a basis of stratified random sampling.Having been developed from The Royal Institute๛s Book of How to Readand Write, the 25-problem tests, each for reading and writing skills in Thai usage,were used as researching tools.The statistics used in data analysis were frequency, percentage, average,standard deviation, and F-test (one-way ANOVA).The research showed that all students๛ reading skill was at the high levelwhile their writing skill stayed in the medium zone. Overall, their Thai languagereading and writing skills were at the medium level. Students๛ problems in Thailanguage reading and writing resulted from incorrect experiences and memorizationof wrong Thai usage.Downloads
