Abstract

The objective of this article is to describe Vygotskyûs concept of the Zone of ProximalDevelopment (ZPD) and Scaffolding. Zone of Proximal Development is defined as thedistance between the actual development of a child and the level of potential development.Children can solve problems beyond their actual development level under expert guidanceor in collaboration with more capable peer. Subsequenetly scaffolding concept is explained.According to the concept, teachers take roles in supporting the learnerûs development andproviding guidance or assistance to get to higher developmental level. Guidelines onsuccessful scaffolding are also suggested.
