Abstract

The purposes of this study are to describe analytically lexical variation of the Yongdialect and compare the use of lexicon across three generations of Yong speakers. The findingsreveal Yong variations in three aspects: phonological, lexical, and semantic. Phonologicalvariation is influenced by similar phonemes that affect vowel and tone variations, dissimilation, and assimilation. This type of variation causes phonological speed and stress that affect eitherthe loss or addition of phonemes including the changing word positions. Lexical variation iscaused by the integration of new words used in Bangkok and other regions with Yong wordsthat results in the loss of Yong lexicon. The formation of compounds, synonyms, andreduplicated words including words adopted from other dialects also yields new Yong lexicon.Semantic variation is concerned with widening rather than narrowing meanings.
