Die Darstellung Siams in Ernst von Hesse-Warteggs Siam: Das Reich des weissen Elefanten

Abstract

Abstract The book Siam: Das Reich des weissen Elefanten (1899) was written by Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg (1851-1918), a famous Austrian travel literature author. The travelogue reveals information about the land of Siam (Thailand) and its people and culture during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1853-1910) as the nation was struggling to its sovereignty during the age of Imperialism. The aim of this article is to analyse the representation of Siam in this book, influences of the historical and political backgrounds and the history of mentality on the representation of Siam and important writing techniques used to describe this land. The book reflects, on the one hand, the author’s fascination for the exotic traditional Siamese culture. On the other hand, it shows his eurocentric perception of Siam as “the other” which is evident in his description of the Siamese monarchy, negative image of Buddhism and critique of the modernization reforms of Siam. Keywords : Hesse-Wartegg, German travelogues, otherness, representation of Siam/Thailand บทคัดย่อ หนังสือเรื่อง Siam: Das Reich des weissen Elefanten (1899) มีผู้แต่งคือ Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg (1851-1918) นักเขียนวรรณกรรมท่องเที่ยวชื่อดังชาวออสเตรีย  บันทึกการเดินทางชิ้นนี้เผยให้เห็นข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับประเทศสยามรวมถึงผู้คนและวัฒนธรรมในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ช่วงที่ชาติกำลังดิ้นรนเพื่อรักษาเอกราชในยุคอาณานิคม  บทความนี้ประสงค์จะวิเคราะห์การนำเสนอภาพของสยามในหนังสือเล่มดังกล่าว ในส่วนที่เกี่ยวกับอิทธิพลของสภาพแวดล้อมทางประวัติศาสตร์และการเมือง ประวัติศาสตร์ของความรู้สึกนึกคิด ตลอดจนกลวิธีการเขียนหลักที่ถูกใช้เพื่อบรรยายภาพประเทศสยาม  นอกจากนั้นยังจะวิเคราะห์ให้เห็นถึงมุมมองแบบชาวยุโรปของผู้เขียน ที่มองสยามเป็น “ผู้อื่น” ดังปรากฏอยู่ในคำบรรยายถึงราชวงษ์สยาม ภาพลบของพุทธศาสนา รวมทั้งข้อวิจารณ์ต่อการปฏิรูปประเทศให้ทันสมัยของสยาม คำสำคัญ : Hesse-Wartegg, บันทึกการเดินทางภาษาเยอรมัน, ความเป็นอื่น, การนำเสนอภาพประเทศสยาม/ไทย
